Harmonium

The harmonium is also known as peti or baja. Though it is a very popular musical instrument in India, it is not a native Indian instrument. It is a European instrument which was imported in the last century. It is a reed organ with hand pumped bellows. The keyboard is European, but it has a number of drone reeds which are particularly Indian. The harmonium has a keyboard of over two and one-half octaves and works on a system of bellows. The keyboard is played with the right hand while the left hand is used to operate the bellows. Today, it is used in all musical genre except the south Indian classical.
