Any traditional marriage ceremony is incomplete without the melodious shehnai playing in the background. In fact, whenever you think of Indian traditional marriage ceremony, the Shehnai notes start echoing in your mind; it is that closely connected. It is associated with auspicious occasions like marriages as well as temple processions. Shehnai is a double reed instrument with a tapering bore which progressively increases towards the lower side. The Shehnai has finger-holes to produce semi, quarter and micro-tones. Ustad Bismillah Khan, who recently passed away, was the unrivaled maestro of the Shehnai. Nagada are the kettle drums of the old naubat (traditional ensemble of nine instruments.) These drums are about one to two feet in diameter and played with sticks. Today this instrument is usually used to accompany the shehnai. Measures 7.5" width by 5.5" height.
